TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH BY KATHERINE WOODS.
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. First American Edition. True First Printing. Very Rare.
A handsome solid and unrestored first printing of this wonderful classic story for people of all ages. Dust jacket shows some signs of wear, especially in the corners, but still lies flat and only has a couple very minor tears. The book itself is in great shape with no tears, creases or markings. There is an inscription, "For Douglas from Jane. Christmas, 1943." and the inside back cover has a faint stamp that reads "4A 200." Otherwise I can't find anything else wrong. The book displays nicely and has just the right vintage "patina."
This book has all the points required to show that its a TRUE FIRST EDITION -- Salmon-colored hardcover boards, with dark reddish brown letters on the front cover and spine. There is no reference to additional editions or printings on the copyright page. The price on the dust jacket is listed at $2.00 and there is a 5 line colophon at the end. Chapter Four refers to "sheep" instead of "friend" and Page 27 has a rose in the right hand lower corner (see photos). There are several more indicators but I think the point has been made.
"The Little Prince (French: ''Le Petit Prince''), first published in 1943, is a novella and the most famous work of the French aristocrat writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The novella is the most read and also the most translated book in the French language, and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France allowing it to maintain worldwide sales of over one million copies per year. It has been translated into more than 230 languages and dialects, and has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books ever published.
