Remarquable et très rare cartonnage pour cet ouvrage consacré à Auguste Chapdelaine missionnaire catholique, exécuté en Chine dans la province du Kouang-si (Guangxi), le 29 février 1856. Il avait pour nom en chinois Ma Laï. Son exécution a été le prétexte pris par le Comte Walewski, ministre français des Affaires Étrangères, pour rejoindre les Britanniques dans leur expédition navale et terrestre contre la Chine qui inaugure la seconde guerre de l'opium.
L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur le portrait de Chapdelaine gravé sur bois par Fleuret.

Cartonnage historié de l'éditeur en percaline rouge, orné de fers dorés, argentés et noirs. Plaque gravée par Souze figurant une rivière avec jonques, temple et dragon sous les rayons du Saint Esprit; Toutes tranches dorées.

Un très rare cartonnage, probablement à tout petit tirage, d'un éditeur peu connu.

Bel exemplaire, reliure solide, percaline avec légères traces de manipulations. Cahiers un peu déréglés. Intérieur frais, papier un peu jauni, quelques très pâles rousseurs.

Boursin / Souze - Trip to China. A Norman martyr, the venerable Auguste Chapdelaine - 1880

Remarkable and very rare cardboard for this work dedicated to Auguste Chapdelaine Catholic missionary, executed in China in the province of Kouang-si (Guangxi), on February 29, 1856. His name was in Chinese Ma Laï. His execution was the pretext taken by Count Walewski, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, to join the British in their naval and land expedition against China which inaugurated the Second Opium War.
The book opens with the portrait of Chapdelaine engraved on wood by Fleuret.

Historiated cartonnage of the publisher in red percaline, decorated with gold, silver and black irons. Plate engraved by Souze representing a river with junks, temple and dragon under the rays of the Holy Spirit; All golden edges.

A very rare hardcover, probably in very small print runs, from a little-known publisher.

Nice copy, solid binding, percaline with slight traces of handling. Slightly out of order notebooks. Fresh interior, slightly yellowed paper, some very pale foxing.
