Edition originale de cette colossale "Monographie des Betsileo", ouvrage ethnologique majeur de plus de 1500 pages, par le jésuite Henri Dubois, publié en 1938.

Contient de nombreux dessins in-texte et reproductions de photos, plusieurs tableaux dont quelques dépliants. En définitive, également 3 cartes dépliantes et X hors-texte de paysages et de portraits (pl. IV en couleurs).

Ouvrage divisé en quatre parties : Le Pays (climat, peuplement...) - Les Betsileo individuels, familiaux et locaux (portrait moral, vêtements, coiffures, parures...) - Les Betsileo religieux (crines et esprits, idée de Dieu...) - L'art et la littérature (dessin et sculpture, chant, musique, danse...)

Le terme Betsileo fait référence à un groupe ethnique situé dans la partie sud des terres centrales de l'île de Madagascar. Traditionnellement, cette ethnie occupait un territoire s'étendant de la rivière Mania au nord au massif de l'Andringitra au sud. Le royaume Betsileo trouva son épanouissement au cœur de Fianarantsoa.

Selon le Père Dubois, l'ethnie Betsileo est née du métissage entre les nobles immigrés de la partie sud des terres centrales et les nobles Vazimba.

Reliure de l'éditeur, cartonnage percaline vert, titre en lettres dorées le long du dos. - Volume solide et bien conservé, coins pliés. Intérieur frais et propre, papier légèrement jauni. Bel exemplaire.

First edition of this colossal "Monograph of the Betsileo", a major ethnological work of more than 1500 pages, by the Jesuit Henri Dubois, published in 1938.

Contains many in-text drawings and photo reproductions, several tables including some leaflets. Ultimately, also 3 folding maps and X inset plates of landscapes and portraits (pl. IV in color).

Work divided into four parts: The Country (climate, settlement...) - The individual, family and local Betsileo (moral portrait, clothing, hairstyles, ornaments...) - The religious Betsileo (manes and spirits, idea of God...) - Art and literature (drawing and sculpture, song, music, dance...)

The term Betsileo refers to an ethnic group located in the southern part of the central lands on the island of Madagascar. Traditionally, this ethnic group occupied a territory extending from the Mania River in the north to the Andringitra Massif in the south. The Betsileo kingdom found its fulfillment in the heart of Fianarantsoa.

According to Father Dubois, the Betsileo ethnic group was born as a result of interbreeding between the noble immigrants in the southern part of the central lands and the Vazimba nobles.
