Excellent manual devoted to Infinitesimal Calculus by the mathematician Jean-Marie Constant Duhamel (1797-1872) interesting for knowledge of the techniques for calculating areas and volumes of objects so small that there is no way of seeing them or to measure them. The word "infinitesimal" comes from infinitesimus, which originally meant the "infinitesimal" element in a series.

Duhamel taught at the École Polytechnique for nearly 40 years. In 1841, lecturer in mechanics and differential calculus at the École Normale, then appointed lecturer in differential calculus, replacing Abelard Lévy. He left these positions in 1849 (replaced by Victor Puiseux), to occupy the chair of higher algebra and geodesy at the faculty of sciences, replacing Francoeur, who had retired.

In his preface he writes: "The approach followed in the first part of this work is very different from that adopted by the various authors who have written on the same subject. It does not relate precisely to any existing teaching, but to teaching as I believe it should be."

Well-made binding in green half-chagrin, percaline covers at the first, the iron of an educational institution with the monogram "S-B".

Ribbed spine decorated with small golden irons. Leatheretted title and volume compartments.
Usual friction. slight foxing.

Excellent manuel consacré au Calcul Infinitésimal du mathématicien Jean-Marie Constant Duhamel (1797-1872) intéressant pour connaître les techniques de calcul d'aires et de volumes d'objets si petits qu'il n'y a aucun moyen de les voir ni de les mesurer. Le mot « infinitésimal » vient d’infinitesimus, qui signifiait à l’origine l’élément « infinitésimal » d’une série.

Duhamel a enseigné à l'École Polytechnique pendant près de 40 ans. En 1841, maître de conférences en mécanique et calcul différentiel à l'École Normale, puis nommé maître de conférences en calcul différentiel, en remplacement d'Abélard Lévy. Il quitte ces postes en 1849 (remplacé par Victor Puiseux), pour occuper la chaire d'algèbre supérieure et de géodésie à la faculté des sciences, en remplacement de Francoeur, retraité.

Dans sa préface il écrit : « La démarche suivie dans la première partie de cet ouvrage est très différente de celle adoptée par les différents auteurs qui ont écrit sur le même sujet. Elle ne porte précisément sur aucun enseignement existant, mais sur l'enseignement tel que je le considère. je crois que cela devrait être le cas. »

Reliure de belle facture en demi-chagrin vert, plats de percaline au premier, fer d'un établissement scolaire avec le monogramme "S-B".

Dos à nerfs orné de petits fers dorés. Compartiments de titre et de tome similicuir.
Frottements habituels. légères rousseurs.
Très bon état.
