In 1933, then living in Berlin and sensing the danger that threatened the Jews of Eastern Europe, Roman Vishniac undertook to capture their memory on film.
To this end, he began an 8,000-kilometer journey that would take him to the ghettos and remote villages of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
The result was 16,000 photographs, of which only 2,000 have been preserved and which constitute both a valuable chronicle of the Jewish world before the Holocaust and a work of rare artistic quality.

En 1933, alors vivant à Berlin et sentant le danger qui menaçait les Juifs d’Europe de l’Est, Roman Vishniac entreprit de filmer leur mémoire.
À cette fin, il entreprend un voyage de 8 000 kilomètres qui le mènera dans les ghettos et villages reculés de Pologne, de Lettonie, de Lituanie, de Hongrie et de Tchécoslovaquie.
Le résultat fut 16 000 photographies, dont seulement 2 000 ont été conservées et qui constituent à la fois une précieuse chronique du monde juif avant la Shoah et une œuvre d'une rare qualité artistique.
