Épais folio Edition de Luxe avec gravures originales hors textes réalisées en 24 plaques gravées sur du papier indien à la cuve. Superbement relié en maroquin original complet. Les plats sont uniformément dorées. Sur les dos sont dorés les titres «Comédies», «Histoires» et «Tragédies». Les bordures supérieures sont dorés et toutes les autres tranches papier non rognées. L'intérieur présente des dentelles. Gardes marbrées. Le texte en double colonne est "une reproduction scrupuleuse de l'original, y compris toutes les particularités de la pagination, de l'orthographe et de la ponctuation" . Imprimé sur du beau papier dit indien (le papier indien est un papier fabriqué à la cuve, à la main, à Oxford, uniquement) fait à la main. Un fac-similé de la première édition réunissant les pièces de théâtre de Shakespeare et en comprenant un total de 36. Les comédies historiques et les tragédies du dramaturge et sans doute le livre le plus important de la langue anglaise sans lequel 18 pièces de Shakespeare, dont Macbeth, auraient été perdues (Bibliothèque Folger) pour toujours. Shakespeare n.d. Comprend des reproductions des portraits connus de Shakespeare. Qqes rousseurs éparses et rares.
Comme indiqué dans la Préface "Dans les coins les plus reculés du monde, où que la langue anglaise ait pénétré, se trouvent les œuvres du plus grand dramaturge, cité et vénéré comme le plus grand classique anglais. Ses paroles font maintenant partie de notre discours commun et sont quotidiennes. Des millions de ses compatriotes lui font écho aussi naturellement que les vagues reflètent les rayons du soleil ".

Thick folio Edition de Luxe with India-proof (Indian paper was made in Oxford - G.B. art) impressions of the 24 full-page engraved plates. Stunningly bound in original full morocco. Uniformly gilt front & rear covers. Spines gilt with raised bands and titled 'Comedies' 'Histories' and 'Tragedies'. Top edges gilt and other edges uncut. Inside dentelles. Marbled endpapers. The text in double-column is "a scrupulously accurate reproduction of the original including all those peculiarities of paging spelling and punctuation" p. i. Printed on hand-made paper. Particularly fine. An ideal gift. A facsimile of the first collected edition of Shakespeare's plays comprising a total of 36 of the master playwright's Comedies Histories and Tragedies and arguably the most important book in the English language without which 18 of Shakespeare's plays including Macbeth Twelfth Night and The Tempest would have been lost forever Folger Shakespeare Library n.d. Only a very few instances of light foxing. Three volumes. Large folio (10 by 17 inches), original full green morocco, elaborately blind- and gilt-decorated embossed boards, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. A fine copy.
As noted in the Preface "In the most distant quarters of the world wherever the English language has penetrated are the works of the greatest dramatist read quoted and reverenced as the greatest English classic. His words have become a part of our common speech and are daily echoed by millions of his countrymen as naturally as the waves reflect the sunbeams."
