COLUMBUS OUTDONE: An Exact Narrative of the Voyage of the Yankee Skipper Capt. Wm. A. Andrews in the Boat "Sapolio"

by William A. Andrews, gathered and edited by Artemas Ward

A stirring tale of quixotic adventure, consisting mostly of the log kept by Captain William A. Andrews as he crossed the Atlantic Ocean from New Jersey to Spain in a 14.5-foot handmade vessel in the summer of 1892. This record for crossing the Atlantic in the smallest boat stood for over 70 years.

The boat was christened the "Sapolio", which was a brand of soap. Indeed, this voyage was financed by the manufacturer as a publicity stunt. Artemas Ward, who dreamt up and arranged the adventure as well as edited the book, was the company's advertising manager. This copy is signed twice by Ward, garishly in ink on the first page, more sedately in pencil on the following page.

This hardcover first printing remains in very good shape for its 130+ years. The covers show minor general handling, mostly at the corners; the binding is sound; the text is somewhat toned with age and has minor signs of use but for the most part remains in fine shape. Very rare in any condition.

Measures 5.5" X 7.75", 198 pages with a number of illustrations, including two small fold-outs.

Ships promptly & securely.
