» Jean Rostand, 1952.

HELVETIUS, Claude Adrien.
Johan Caspar Arkstée & Henricus Merkus, 1772., Amsterdam & Leipzig, 1772. 2 vols. 8vo. Vol. 1: (4), VIII, 384 pp.; vol. 2: (4), 392 pp. Very good edition of one of the most interesting classics of the Enlightment written by the well-known Encyclopedist, Claude Adrien Helvetius (1715-1771). The first edition was published in 1758 by the same publishers, Arkstée & Merkus in Amsterdam and Leipzig in 3 vols. The French philosopher Claude Adrien Helvetius was appointed farmer general in 1738, a post that involved the collection of the royal income. Soon he resigned, however, because of the corruption of his collegues in office and became 'maître d'hôtel', or steward to his patron, Queen Marie Leszczynska, wife of Louis XV. Tiring of the idle and dissipated life of the court, he married in 1751 and retired to a small estate at Vore, in Perche, where he devoted himself to litterary efforts and philosophical studies. He was one of the famous Encyclopedists, and shared the skeptical and materialistic views common to that school of philosophy. In his most important work, De l'esprit Helvetius, whose personal life was a model of virtue, carried the theory of hedonism to an extreme of selfish sensuality. He asserted that all human faculties, including judgment, the power of comparison and even memory, are mere attributes of physical sensation; that the only motive of human activity is self-interest and that no choice exists between good and evil or right and wrong. Helvetius's work immediately was condemned after publication by the theological faculty of the Sorbonne as an affront to public morals, containing all the poisons of the modern time, and it was publicly burnt in 1759. Diderot called th book 'un furieux coup de massure porté sur les préjugés'. The book was translated into most European languages (English edition in 1759 under the title De l'Esprit: or, essays on the mind) and read more than any other book of the time. Cioranescu 33643 (1st ed.); ed. of 1959 with an extensive introd. and notes by G. Besse; reprint of the English ed. of 1810 with introd (New York, Franklin, 1970); ed. 1973 (Verviers, Gérard) with introd. by Fr. Châtelet.
