Rare first posthumous edition of the first Western translation of the Rigveda by Friedrich A Rosen (1805 - 1837 Professor of Sanskrit at University College, London), known as "Rigveda Sanhita, Liber Primus, Sanskrit and Latin." Contains 121 hymns translated from after the manuscripts reported from India by Henry Thomas Colebrooke The RIGVEDA one of the 4 great canonical texts (Śruti) of Hinduism which are known as the Vedas.It is one of the oldest texts existing in Indo-European language, its composition dates back to 1500 BC and 900 BC. Sanskrit text in devanagari characters is followed by transliteration in italics and the Latin version of Rosen neatly printed on the same page by JL Cox and Sons. Incomplete translation, the sudden death of Rosen interrupted his work for which according to the anonymous preface "no one has been so well qualified and prepared as himself".

Friedrich August Rosen (2 September 1805 in Hannover – 12 September 1837 in London) was a German Orientalist, brother of Georg Rosen and a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He studied in Leipzig, and from 1824 in Berlin under Franz Bopp. He was briefly professor of oriental literature at the University of London and became secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1831. His Rigvedae specimen, excerpts from the Rigveda based on manuscripts brought back from India by Colebrooke, were enthusiastically received by European academia as the first authentic evidence of the archaic Vedic Sanskrit language. His most important work was an edition of the entire Rigveda, left incomplete at his premature death on his 32nd birthday. His translation of the first book of the Rigveda appeared posthumously in 1838. The remaining books remained unedited for another five decades, until the editio princeps of Max Müller in 1890-92.

Contient 121 hymnes traduit d'après les manuscrits rapportés de l'Inde par Henry Thomas Colebrooke. Le RIGVEDA un des 4 grands textes canoniques (Śruti) de l'hindouisme qui sont connus sous le nom de Veda. C'est l'un des plus anciens textes existant en langue indo-européenne. Sa composition remonte entre 1500 et 900 av. J.-C..
Texte en sanskrit en caractères devanagari est suivi de la translittération en caractères italiques et de la version latine de Rosen soigneusement imprimés sur la même page par JL Cox and Sons.
Traduction incomplète, la mort subite de Rosen a interrompu son travail pour lequel d'après la préface anonyme " personne n'a été si bien qualifié et préparé comme lui-même".

Friedrich August Rosen (né le 2 septembre 1805 à Hanovre - décédé le 12 septembre 1837 à Londres) était un orientaliste allemand, frère de Georg Rosen et ami proche de Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Il a étudié à Leipzig et à partir de 1824 à Berlin sous la direction de Franz Bopp. Il fut brièvement professeur de littérature orientale à l'Université de Londres et devint secrétaire de la Royal Asiatic Society en 1831. Ses spécimens de Rigvedae, extraits du Rigveda d'après des manuscrits rapportés de l'Inde par Colebrooke, furent reçus avec enthousiasme par les universités européennes. Preuve authentique du sanskrit archaïque védique. Son travail le plus important était une édition de l'intégralité du Rigveda, laissé incomplet lors de son décès prématuré à l'âge de 32 ans. Sa traduction du premier livre du Rigveda parut à titre posthume en 1838. Les livres restants restèrent inédits pendant cinq décennies, jusqu'à l'édition princeps de Max Müller en 1890-1892.

It was the intention of the author [Friedrich August Rosen, 1805-37, professor of Sanskrit at University College, London] to publish the text with a transla tion, explanatory notes, and an index verborum, and to have prefixed to the whole a comprehensive view of the character and manners of the Hindoos in that early period to which the origin of the Vedas is to be referred. But a sudden death,inthe prime of life,and in the full vigour of his intellectual powers, just after he had completed his 32nd year, overthrew at once this great project, and interrupted an undertaking for which no one was so well qualified and prepared as himself.
