José Gudiol (1904-1985) a consacré sa vie à l'étude de l'art hispanique; il organisa la collection espagnole de la Frick Library à New York en 1931-32 et fut le directeur fondateur de l'Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art, à Barcelone.

Le volume I, est le volume de texte avec une biographie de l'artiste avec un essai approfondi sur «l'évolution générale de son œuvre», un catalogue analytique des peintures, des concordances et une riche bibliographie. Les volumes II-IV comprennent les 1295 planches, nombreuses et couleurs, y compris de nombreux détails importants des grandes peintures. José Gudiol (1904-1985) devoted his life to the study of Hispanic art; he organized the Spanish collection of the Frick Library in New York in 1931-32 and was the founding director of the Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art in Barcelona.

Volume I, is the text volume with a biography of the artist with an extensive essay on the "general evolution of his work", an analytical catalog of the paintings, concordances and a rich bibliography. Volumes II-IV comprise the 1295 plates, many and colors, including many prominent details of the large paintings. Volume II covers the years 1765-1788; Volume III, 1789-1805; and Volume IV, 1806-1828, each with "Index of illustrations" in laid sheets. Texts in English.
